Ruth Wilson opened up about leaving The Affair in 2018, admitting it was because she “didn’t feel safe.”
The actress, who starred alongside Dominic West in the drama about two married people having an affair, said Stylist there were “things [that] I didn’t feel well, I took care of them and managed to protect myself.

Ruth before noted she was “not allowed to say why” she left the show. A report of The Hollywood Reportuh claimed the decision was due to “the frequency and nature of some nude scenes,” as well as a hostile work environment.

In a response statement released in December 2019, The Affair showrunner Sarah Treem said (via THR):
“I am not a manipulative person and I have always been a feminist. I did all I could think of to do [Wilson] feel comfortable with these scenes. I have devoted my entire professional life writing and speaking about women’s issues, women’s causes, women’s empowerment and creating strong and complex roles for women in theater and Hollywood, on screen. and off screen.
“The reason I even created The Affair was to illuminate how the female experience of moving around the world is so different from that of men, it’s like speaking a second language. The idea that I will ever cultivate a dangerous environment or harass a woman on one of my shows is utterly ridiculous and lacks any basis in reality. ‘
