Northwestern University suspends fraternity activities after school receives reports of drugs at Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon gatherings

Northwestern University has suspended social events and recruiting activities at its fraternities for at least three weeks after several people filed reports with the school alleging they were drugged at two fraternity houses last week on its campus in outside of Chicago. The university said it was investigating the reports.

“Let’s be clear: the health, safety and well-being of our students remains our top priority and we take these allegations very seriously,” Mona Dugo, the school’s assistant vice president for well-being, and Bruce Lewis, Senior Associate Vice President. for safety and security, said in a misdemeanor notice posted online.

The school said it received separate reports on Friday of an unspecified number of people alleging they were drugged without their consent during a rally at an address in Evanston, Ill., Where the main campus is located. ‘school. On Saturday, the school received a similar report from a person claiming to be drugged on Friday night during a rally at another address in Evanston.

The school identified the two addresses as fraternity houses on campus. The address associated with Friday’s reports is the address of the school chapter of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, and the address linked to the Saturday report is the address of the school’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter.

“Alpha Epsilon Pi is horrified by these stories and our members are fully cooperating with the University’s investigation to find those responsible,” the fellowship said in a statement to CBS Chicago WBBM-TV. “If found guilty, these perpetrators should be punished with all the rigor of the law.

Dozens of students demonstrated outside the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house on Sunday evening, with some calling for the abolition of all Greek life at the school, WBBM-TV reports. The chapter was suspended in 2017 for about a year and a half for serving alcohol to minors after the school closed an investigation into an alleged sibling sexual assault, WBBM-TV reported.

The suspension of activities announced over the weekend applies to all fraternities in the school and continues until at least October 17, the Sunday following the events of the university’s reunion week.
