The life coaching lesson you didn’t know you needed from Riff Raff

If you searched the dictionary for individuality, I guarantee you would see a photo of Riff Raff.

Riff Raff has managed to create a cult of personality by being ridiculously eccentric and “living in real time” as he calls it. His career as a rapper and fashion icon could be summed up in a proverb he seems to follow: Listen to no one.

The Houston-born MC became an internet sensation in the mid-2000s and then a hip-hop anomaly. But when you are as rare and special as Riff Raff, becoming the underdog of the music industry is worth embracing.

“You can’t even listen to anyone,” Riff Raff said in a recent interview with Chron. “Listen to what’s inside and what you want to do, you know. It can’t be that you do things for other people, it has to be something you want to do and something. that you are trying to express. That’s what art is about expressing yourself.

“I’m not interested in being relevant. I’d rather be rare,” Riff Raff told Chron.

Allowing life to be his web and staying true to himself has helped catapult his career, Riff Raff said.

OPINION: Diddy creates his own political party. I won’t hold my breath

Despite his exaggerated outward appearance, he is widely respected in the music industry – artists like Wiz Khalifa and Action Bronson have both donated their props to Riff Raff. While the Texas native could be credited with trends like luxurious diamond jewelry, shark-shaped grids and colored hair, he remains modest.

“I can tell you what is my definition of an artist, it is not to give a [expletive] about all this [expletive]”said Riff Raff.” The best places I’ve had the best food aren’t even a food chain. The best orange juice I’ve had in my life isn’t Tropicana.

According to the self-proclaimed “Neon Icon,” the first rule of thumb is that you never want to be that guy. You know the guy always talks about what he did, or what he used to do.

“I never want to be that guy. I don’t want to be the guy or the artist who likes to look at everyone and then say, ‘Oh, I did this first, I did this first,’ “he said.

The best part about starting a trend and getting others involved is that it just means you’re ahead of the curve.

“You don’t get anything for being the first. You don’t get a check or a reward for that stuff, ”said Riff Raff. “Instead, I just focus on the future and what I’m going to do next, so I can beat everyone in the fist.”

Riff Raff said he thinks the comparison is a thief of joy and you should only do the things that make you happy. He stressed the importance of watering your lawn because “the grass is greener where you water it”.

Riff Raff made his way by not caring about the ways.

“If you keep looking at others you will never be happy, if you keep comparing yourself to others, no matter what type of car you drive, what type of house you have, your family, your money, little doesn’t matter, “he said.” If you constantly compare yourself to the next person, you won’t be happy. You worry about the wrong thing, you have to focus on what is going to make you happy, and everything else will fall into place.

Riff Raff recalled that the best thing you can do is be yourself, because the real is rare.

“The best things in the world are the rarest for me. I’m not interested in being relevant. I’d rather be rare.”
