When is the last presidential debate scheduled for 2020?

The next presidential debate between the president Donald trump and democratic candidate Joe biden – Following their town halls in duel Thursday night – is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. EST on October 22 in a week.

This will be the second confrontation between the candidates after Trump’s Covid-19 diagnosis and disagreements on a virtual format scuttled plans for debate this week. It’s also the last debate on the calendar – and Election day follows less than two weeks later.

Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, hosts debate, with NBC News’s Kristen welker intended to serve as moderator. The issues that will be addressed during the 90-minute discussion have yet to be announced.

At this point, the Debate of October 22 looks like Trump’s last and best chance to shake up a campaign he’s always dragged on. In early May, shortly after Bernie Sanders dropped out of the Democratic primary and won the nomination for Biden, the former vice president led Trump by 6.1 percentage points in FiveThirtyEight National Poll Average. Its lead has only grown since then, standing at 10.5 percentage points as of October 15.

The race 2020 is characterized by its remarkable stability in the polls. Neither candidate has seen much of a convention rebound over the summer. News stories, in particular Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis – likely undermined Trump’s support, but he was also following Biden early in the year.

The same issues still dominate the headlines and are likely to occupy most of the attention of candidates in their final standoff. The debate takes place on the same day as the vote scheduled by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Amy Coney Barrett’s appointment to the Supreme Court. The United States is currently experiencing a new wave of Covid-19 cases, and almost 900,000 Americans have applied for unemployment assistance Last week.

There have been signs of desperation from the Trump campaign, the latest being that of Rudy Giuliani extremely sketchy attempt turn a Hunter Biden e-mail in a national scandal. The next debate will be the president’s last opportunity to ensure that some of these attacks stay on the minds of voters before they go to the polls.

But in fact, Trump and Biden’s first debate seems to have influenced the race the most so far. The viewers massively thought that Biden won, given the president’s erratic performance, which was shortly followed by his positive coronavirus test. On September 29, the day of the first debate, the FiveThirtyEight poll average showed Biden up 7.1 percentage points; since then the gap has widened by more than 3 percentage points.

Biden also holds substantial, if not insurmountable, rights, survey leads in the largest swing states, giving it a clear path to 270 Electoral College votes. Trump, on the other hand, must dramatically improve his standing in those states – or place his hopes in huge poll failure – in order to be re-elected.

The October 22 debate is the last time the incumbent and his challenger will share a national television platform from which to present their final arguments to American voters. For Biden, he’ll want to stay stable and finish the race strong, while Trump needs to regain some momentum. This is probably a serious challenge: Millions of Americans have already voted, and the president is running out of time.
