West Virginia program that helps low-income children wear school clothes is open to applicants

PARKERSBURG, Va. (WTAP) – The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, also known as DHHR, has opened applications for its annual education allowance program called West Virginia School Clothing Allowance.

This annual program aims to give low-income children a level playing field at the start of the school year. Each eligible child receives a benefit of $ 200 which can be used to purchase school-appropriate clothing or materials for families who sew their clothes.

Some people may automatically benefit from this service. This includes families with school-going children who are already receiving cash assistance from WV WORKS, parents or guardians of foster children, and children aged 4-18 who are enrolled in SNAP, enrolled in the school and who live in a household with an income below 130% Poverty level.

However, you may be eligible if your gross monthly income looks like …

  • You are a one-person household and earn $ 1,383 or less per month.
  • You are a two-person household and earn $ 1,868 or less per month.
  • You are a household of three and earn $ 2,353 or less per month.
  • You are a household of four and earn $ 2,839 or less per month.
  • You are a household of five and earn $ 3,324 or less per month.
  • You are a household of six and earn $ 3,809 or less per month.
  • You are a household of seven and earn $ 4,295 or less per month.
  • You are a household of eight and earn $ 4,780 or less per month.
  • You are a household of nine and earn $ 5,266 or less per month.
  • You are a household of 10 and earn $ 5,752 or less per month.

Division of Family Assistance program director Ashley Puffenbarger said the program gives children a boost of self-confidence.

“I like to think this program helps build confidence in low-income children. They don’t have to feel different from children who are not part of a low-income household or low-income population. It gives our children a good start. “

To apply, go to www.wvpath.org or request a paper application by calling 1-877-716-1212 or contacting your local DHHR office.

All applications must be received by July 31.
