Indian Navy operation to find trapped Meghalaya miners continues, body recovered, Energy News, ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: Indian Navy divers recovered a body after six days of operations to find five miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

In one of the most physically and tactically intimidating operations, a 12-member Indian Navy dive team has been in action since June 12 to search for the five miners trapped in the mine, which was flooded after an explosion dynamite on May 30.

Sources said they recovered the body of a minor and that efforts to search for the other four are still ongoing.

The current operation involves Navy divers themselves and their specialized scuba gear lowering an extremely narrow well to a depth of nearly 400 feet and performing dives up to an additional 100 feet, to search for the trapped miners. in a complex labyrinth of horizontal wells. , with barely enough space for a person to crawl.

Diving operations are further complicated by poor underwater visibility, risks of construction of unmapped wells, wrecks and falling debris. In addition, prolonged diving at low temperatures (3 to 5 degrees Celsius) presents significant medical risks such as hypothermia.

Also currently, more than 50 members of the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, District Disaster Response Force, Department of Fire and emergency and police have been deployed to the site, and naval divers trained to dive to such depths are performing the critical task of searching for and recovering the remains of trapped miners.

Even with relentless rains, low visibility and numerous obstacles, Navy divers are diligently continuing the search operation that entered the sixth day, with the hope that any light at the end of the tunnel will bring comfort and relief. sustainable closures to families.

While divers have specialized equipment like the Diver’s Hand-Held Navigation System (DHNS) to map the bottom of the mine shaft, no technology can do much to improve the raw, heart-wrenching adversity than a such operation implies.

In December 2018, the Indian Navy participated in the rescue and recovery efforts of 15 miners trapped in a mine in Ksan, Meghalaya, under similar conditions.
