Meggie Shoemaker, a health and physical education teacher at Bedford-area middle school, received $700 to buy dumbbells for lifelong fitness. Students will experience non-competitive physical activity as part of the physical education curriculum so youngsters can be empowered to train and go to a gym as adults.

Danielle Simpson, a counselor at Everett Area Middle School, will use the $600 grant to create a mindfulness club, where students will learn techniques to help them increase focus, reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and to gain empathy for others.

Meghan Brown, a learning support teacher at Chestnut Ridge High School, will use $200 from Alpha Beta to improve the student-run bakery at the school. Students prepare and package baked goods sold to staff in the faculty lounge. Students use their math skills and manage a bank account for the bakery. Profits are donated to the Humane Society.
